Books I’ve Read (2020)

Reading is my vice :)
So not enough time, too many books :)
This years running list is below. You can find older years at the bottom.

January

  • Presto!: How I Made Over 100 Pounds Disappear and Other Magical Tales, Penn Jillette
    must read.
my favourite potty mouthed magician loses nearly 50 kilos and of course, I want to know how he did it.
while i would not tread Penn’s path, the book is a delight.
a loud, extremely digressive, expletive laden, foul mouthed, full of inspiration, delight.
this is him explaining proteins as amino acids,

“That’s all a protein is: just a sequence of twenty amino acids. (Wikipedia agrees with CrayRay on this—I checked. Some articles say twenty-one amino acids are needed; let’s just call it “a bunch.”) The order and length of the amino acid sequence gives protein its function and a 3-D shape without clunky 3-D glasses. Everyone makes the comparison to the twenty letters of our alphabet and how those twenty letters make words, sentences, paragraphs, chapters, and books. “Wait just a minute,” you say, “we don’t have a twenty-letter alphabet, we have a twenty-six-letter alphabet.”
    And then I say, “Oh, I guess I left out U R A Q T!”
And then you say, “That’s still only twenty-five.”
And I say, “I’ll give you the D later.”
And then you say, “I guess what you really meant is that there are twenty amino acids, so your analogy to our twenty-six-letter alphabet is off by six, asshole.”

And to be sure, it was not magic. it was extremely hard work.

  • Revolution in The Valley: The Insanely Great Story of How the Mac Was Made, Andy Hertzfeld
Look! it’s a bunch of war stories! it's an awesome website! it’s a book made from stories on a website!
    The title says it all.
Joyful, sad, amusing, funny, and a lovely ode to the Macintosh.
If you’ve ever heard a story about the Mac, it’s most probably from the website, book.
Must read, if you are into the history of computing

February

  • Fanocracy, David & Reiko Scott
typical business book. lots of good anecdotes.
you don’t really need it if you’ve been reading Seth all these years

  • The Muscle & Strength Pyramid: Nutrition, Eric Helms, Andrea Valdez, and Andy Morgan
for me this has been an eyeopener, when it comes to dieting and weight loss.
while it is targeted at people aiming to build muscle, the knowledge is pretty down to earth and easy to understand.
it has given me a good foundation on how to approach food and dieting just like Dave Ramsey, simplified money for me.
    must read.

  • The Muscle & Strength Pyramid: Training, Eric Helms, Andrea Valdez, and Andy Morgan
did not find this as informative as the nutrition book.
    not too beginner friendly.
good read if you want to build a body though.

  • Convict Conditioning, Paul Wade
    must read
was looking for a book that would let me continue my physio journey, once I am done at the clinic in a month or two.
weight training is out of the question for now.
body weight exercises seem to be my best bet.
and this book is the book to get if you want to do that.
Paul is a no nonsense, mince no words, coach, like the teachers of my youth.
will definitely be starting with this to build strength over the next few years.
